EastMed Inc. is based in Halifax, Nova Scotia and is dedicated to inventing and bringing to market medical innovations for women's health and wellness. EastMed's flagship product, the uresta® Continence Care Kit, empowers women to self-manage their stress urinary incontinence (SUI) with an effective alternative to traditional products. Here is the team at EastMed.

Our Team

Scott Farrell
MD FRCSC, Founder and Vice-President Medical
Scott is a full professor and Head of the Urogynaecology Division in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at Dalhousie University.  He has 20 years of clinical and research experience as a urogynaecologist caring for women’s bladder and pelvic health. He is a leading world authority on urinary incontinence and pessaries, having written and published a significant number of medical papers and a book on these subjects. Scott was President of the Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecologists of Canada, 2008-2009. Scott is also the inventor of EastMed’s first product offering called the uresta® kit.

Dave Alward
BBA, Vice-President Business Development & Operations
Dave has many years of experience in senior management, sales and marketing, as well as 22 years in the IT sector and he's a valuable asset to EastMed.

Karen Farrell
BA, BSC, MA (HEED), Vice-President Regulatory Affairs, Health Education
Karen has extensive experience working with women with incontinence as a patient educator and counsellor.  She recently completed her Masters of Health Education degree at Dalhousie University conducting research on Internet health resources for women with incontinence.

Henry Taylor
RPA, Chief Financial Officer – Financial Management & Investor Relations
Henry brings over 30 years of experience in senior finance and accounting roles to EastMed.  He’s worked in the IT sector for over 15 years and has experience with both MITI and Xwave.  Henry was also Chief Accountant for the City of Halifax for several years.

Dr. Scott Farrell
Vice President
Dr. Farrell founded EastMed Inc. in 2002 with a goal to invent and bring to market medical innovations that address women’s health and wellness. A renowned Canadian urogynaecologist he is also the Head of the Urogynaecology Division at the IWK Health Centre.

Stephen Hartlen
Director
Mr. Hartlen is the assistant vice president of industry relations and executive director of the office of Industry Liaison and Innovation at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Dalhousie's Industry Liaison and Innovation Office commercializes research at the university, manages and facilitates collaborations between companies and university researchers and assists in the creation of spin-off ventures.

Prior in joining Dalhousie in 2011 Stephen spent the last eight years at InNOVAcorp, Nova Scotia's crown corporation for the commercialization of early stage research, serving as vice president of mentoring and most recently, interim president and CEO. InNOVAcorp's internationally recognized business model, High Performance Incubation, is designed to enable early stage Nova Scotia companies to accelerate commercialization of their technologies and increase competitiveness in export markets.

Prior to InNOVAcorp Stephen spent more than 14 years in the private sector with experience in business development, sales, and go-to-market strategy development in both the corporate financial services and the information technology sectors.

Stephen is a graduate of Dalhousie University with a Bachelor of Commerce in Economics and Saint Mary's University with a Master of Business Administration in Finance. He is an advisory board member to the Dalhousie CRMBA program and a board member of EastMed Inc. and Thorasys Inc.. Stephen is also pursuing the Chartered Director designation through the DeGroote School of Business at McMaster University and the Conference Board of Canada.

Phil Anzarut
Director
Mr. Anzarut joined BDC Venture Capital in January 2009 with over 15 years of corporate finance and mergers and acquisitions experience both on the buy side and the sell side.  Phil is a former investment banker, having begun his career in Corporate Finance at HSBC Securities.  In 2001, he joined TELUS Corporation as Director Corporate Development / Mergers & Acquisitions and spent the next seven years leading acquisitions and strategic divestitures on behalf of TELUS – both at the corporate level and for TELUS Ventures.   Phil has also led acquisitions on behalf of CAE Inc. in Montreal.  Phil is a member of the Board of Directors of TbayTel.

Phil has a Bachelors degree from McGill in Microbiology and Immunology and an MBA from the Schulich School of Business at York.

Lidija Marusic
Director
Dr. Lidija Marusic is an investment manager with InNOVAcorp, assessing investment opportunities and providing advice and guidance to early stage technology entrepreneurs through InNOVAcorp's High Performance Incubation (HPi)TM business model. 
Formerly, Lidija established a Halifax office for MedInnova Partners Inc., a seed fund focusing on commercializing biomedical discoveries, and worked as a lead investment analyst in neurosciences at MDS Capital (now Lumira Capital) performing scientific, financial and market due diligence related to investment opportunities.

Lidija holds an MD from the University of Zagreb in Croatia, a PhD from the International School for Advanced Studies in Trieste, Italy, and an MBA from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. Lidija is currently a member of the board of directors of DementiaGuide Inc. and Performance Genomics Inc. (observer).

Lidija also served on the Proof of Principle Peer Review Committee of the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) and as an ad hoc reviewer for the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).
